Embracing Summer Running: Gear Up for the Heat
The transition from the scorching summer days to the cooler fall season stirs excitement for many runners. With the end of summer around the corner, longer days and balmy temperatures present the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running. As race days approach, it’s essential to soak in those sunny runs and, let’s be honest, there’s nothing quite like taking a refreshing dip in a pool or lake post-workout. But before you lace up and head outdoors, consider some critical elements to enhance your running experience in the heat. Running in the summer, especially with humidity in the mix, is far from straightforward. Layering up in cooler weather allows for strategic removal of clothing, but in the sweltering climate, preparing effectively becomes crucial. The right selection of apparel and accessories can minimize discomfort and elevate your performance. From choosing lightweight, breathable shorts that combat thigh chafing to carrying a handheld water bottle to stay hydrated, these decisions can transform a potentially grueling slog into a delightful run. What this all boils down to is simple: you can take proactive steps to make those hot, humid days not just bearable but enjoyable. Packing the essentials helps optimize your runs, ensuring each step is a little lighter and a lot more fun. Whether you’re gearing up for a casual jog or preparing for a competitive race this fall, investing in the right gear tailored for warm weather won’t just enhance your comfort; it could also bring out your best performance. So before you head out, take stock of your kit and get ready to embrace those sunny strides!- Lululemon Women’s Swiftly Tech Short-Sleeve Shirt 2.0

How We Selected
Living in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley exposes runners to both frigid winters and sweaty summers exceeding 100 degrees with high humidity. Personally, I’ve adopted a cautious approach to workouts during heat waves, avoid anything cotton for running, and ensure my eyes are shielded with polarized sunglasses. Recommendations from my colleagues at Runner’s World also came into play. Our goal? Making your summer runs more comfortable and chafe-free.
We've organized apparel into three categories tailored to summer conditions: high humidity, anti-chafing, and race readiness. While each piece can cross over these categories, I’m unashamedly the person seen in shorts even during a leisurely run. We've also added a selection of must-have accessories because no matter the season, one should never forget to apply sunscreen before stepping out.
